Bailey Dismisses 'Secret Plan' for Unconditional Rate Hikes
The Bank of England's governor, Andrew Bailey, has dispelled rumors of a 'secret plan' to unconditionally raise interest rates. In an appearance before Parliament's Treasury Committee, Bailey emphasized that expectations of rate hikes from financial markets do not necessarily mean they will happen.
Bailey cited the risks of inflation overshooting forecasts as the main concern, particularly with regards to energy prices. He noted that current UK interest rates sit at 3.75% and that economists have widely predicted an increase over the next year.
Megan Greene, an external member of the Bank's monetary policy committee, expressed concerns about volatile energy and commodity costs due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. She suggested that a risk management strategy may be necessary in light of this uncertainty.
