Bailey Flags Inflation Risk Premium in UK Rate Expectations
The Bank of England's Governor Andrew Bailey has flagged that investor expectations for UK interest rates include an inflation risk premium, driven by concerns about further energy price increases.
Bailey told the Treasury Committee that market rate expectations contain a 'risk premium' due to worries about additional energy price hikes. This premium goes beyond what can be explained by central bank expectations alone, according to Bank of England analysis.
The Governor emphasized that future rate decisions remain conditional on incoming economic data, rejecting the idea of a predetermined rate hike path. Bailey said he wants to dispel the notion that a Bank of England rate hike is a matter of when rather than a possibility tied to economic developments.
