Bailey Sees AI and Robotics as Key Drivers for UK Growth
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England (BoE), emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in driving faster growth for the UK economy. Speaking at the Federal Reserve's annual conference at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, he noted that there is a 'different growth story' in the UK compared to the US.
Bailey pointed out that AI and robotics are crucial for achieving faster productivity growth, which is essential for the UK's economic recovery. He stated that these technologies will be a 'critical source' of growth, citing their ability to improve efficiency and increase competitiveness.
Regarding inflation, Bailey acknowledged that second-round effects in the UK have been subdued so far, meaning that wage demands and broader shop price increases have not been as pronounced as expected. However, he warned that this situation is evolving and may change.
The BoE's target for Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation remains at 2%, and Bailey reiterated that getting inflation back to this target is their primary objective. CPI inflation rose to 2.9% in July, the highest rate since March, due to energy price increases following the Iran war.
