Bailey Sees No Serious Inflation Pressures in Britain Despite Energy Price Surge
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey expressed his thoughts on the current state of inflation in Britain during an interview at the U.S. Federal Reserve conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He stated that he still sees little sign of serious longer-term inflation pressures due to the surge in energy prices caused by the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Bailey attributed this subdued response to a soft labor market, which limits workers' ability to bargain for higher pay and thus restrain inflation. This assessment is consistent with his previous stance, as he was part of the 6-3 majority on the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee that voted to keep interest rates on hold at 3.75% in July.
