Bailey Sounds Alarm: AI Advances Pose Imminent Threat to Financial Security
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has sounded the alarm on the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), describing recent technological leaps as an 'OMG moment' for financial security. Speaking at the City of London Police Authority Board dinner, Bailey emphasized that the exponential growth of frontier models presents a severe and immediate threat to global cybersecurity frameworks.
The governor stressed that national authorities and regulators must urgently 'arm themselves' with specialized resources and expertise to counteract the offensive capabilities of generative algorithms. He linked the accelerating pace of technological development to the evolution of financial crime, noting that the barrier to entry for executing complex cyberattacks has been drastically lowered.
Bailey's comments align with a recent consensus among AI architects, including Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, who urged companies to voluntarily slow the pace at which they improve their most powerful models. This call was publicly supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, marking a rare moment of agreement among industry rivals.
