Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has warned that advanced AI models could pose significant risks to the global financial system. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the growing threat of cyber threats driven by increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence.

The most advanced AI systems are demonstrating 'increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities,' according to Bailey. He noted that global financial markets and services are highly interconnected, making them vulnerable to disruptions caused by these advanced AI models.

Bailey also expressed concern over the lack of protocols for managing the development, release, and deployment of advanced AI models in many countries. 'Frontier' AI may have the ability to alter the speed, scale, and economics of cyber-risk, which could undermine market confidence system-wide,' he warned.
