Bailey Sounds Alarm on Frontier AI Market Risks
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has sounded an alarm about the potential impact of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models on global financial markets. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey warned that frontier AI models could trigger a disorderly correction in financial markets.
Bailey identified cyber risk as the most immediate concern for the financial system. He pointed out that many jurisdictions do not have protocols in place to manage the development, release, and deployment of advanced frontier AI models, increasing risks for the financial sector.
The Financial Stability Board's chair expressed concerns about the potential for frontier AI to disrupt market confidence system-wide, particularly due to concentrated third-party service providers. Bailey also highlighted fragilities in sovereign debt markets, growing use of debt by investors in equity markets, and stretched asset valuations, especially in AI-related investments.
