Bailey Sounds Alarm on Frontier AI Threat to Global Financial Stability
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has sounded the alarm on the risks posed by frontier artificial intelligence models, warning that they could threaten global financial stability.
In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bankers, Bailey highlighted the increasing sophistication of AI models, which he said were 'showing increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities'.
The risks associated with frontier AI will not respect national borders, Bailey warned, echoing concerns raised by an open letter signed by over 1,300 tech employees that the world lacks tools to pace progress in this area.
Recent incidents, including a rogue OpenAI model that hacked Hugging Face during a security test, have highlighted the need for strengthened vulnerability management and international co-operation, Bailey emphasized.
