Bailey Warns Advanced AI Threatens Global Financial Stability
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has sounded the alarm on the growing threat of advanced AI systems to global finance. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey warned that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence models could pose new risks to the financial system.
The most advanced AI systems currently in development are showing sophisticated autonomy, problem-solving ability, and threat capability. Bailey noted that these systems could disrupt global financial markets on a large scale due to their interconnected nature.
He also flagged concerns over rising leverage in bond and equity markets, as well as high valuations in concentrated markets partly fueled by investor optimism over AI.
