Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has sounded an alarm about potential risks to the global economy from artificial intelligence (AI). In a letter to G20 finance ministers, he warned that a significant downturn in the AI sector could lead to widespread market corrections and reverberate across financial systems worldwide.

Bailey pointed out that high stock valuations, increased investor borrowing, and the concentration of capital in major tech firms have created an unstable environment. He also highlighted concerns about cyber security breaches affecting multiple firms simultaneously, echoing a recent call from 100 tech companies to fortify their defenses before AI technologies compromise existing safeguards.

The governor emphasized the need for companies globally to anticipate and prepare for potential cyber security breaches, which could lead to simultaneous disruptions affecting multiple firms at once. He also called for 'appropriate steps' to ensure safe and responsible AI deployment on a global scale.
