Bailey Warns Global Risks from Advanced AI Technology Could Disrupt Financial System
Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England and chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), has sounded an alarm about global risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In a letter to G20 finance ministers ahead of their meeting in North Carolina, Bailey highlighted concerns regarding 'frontier' AI models that are increasingly demonstrating sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving capabilities.
He warned that these advancements could destabilize the interconnected global financial system through cyber disruptions that can transcend national boundaries. Bailey noted that many jurisdictions currently lack the necessary protocols to manage the development, release, and deployment of these advanced AI models, exacerbating risks for the financial sector and beyond.
The governor's concerns are echoed by leading technologists who have voiced alarms about the growing threats posed by AI. A significant letter signed by over 1,300 researchers and engineers from leading AI labs last month raised similar alarms, cautioning about the rapid acceleration of AI capabilities that could exceed our understanding or control.
