Bailey Warns of AI-Related Financial System Risks: Bank of England Governor Sounds Alarm on Interconnected Vulnerabilities
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has issued a warning about the potential risks to financial infrastructure posed by advanced artificial intelligence. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the fragilities in the AI market, including 'stretched asset valuations'.
The letter also noted that debt plays a significant role in circular investment deals between AI companies and hyperscalers, adding to the financial system's vulnerabilities. Bailey emphasized the interconnected nature of financial systems, pointing out that multiple institutions often rely on the same third-party providers for technology.
As a result, a breach at one key provider could compromise multiple financial institutions. Bailey recommended that decision-makers prepare for disruptions that affect multiple institutions or technology suppliers and implement workflows to restore critical systems and data in case of a cyber incident.
