Bank of America Shares Surge on Rate Expectations
Bank of America shares rose 1.9% on August 30 after investors renewed expectations for higher interest rates, which could boost its $16 billion net interest income. The bank's quarterly earnings report showed a 9% increase in net interest income from the same period last year.
The stock price increased to $62.32, with a market capitalization gain of about $8 billion. This outperformed the broader market, which declined by 0.25%. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh highlighted concerns about inflation, sending Treasury yields up and affecting technology stocks.
Bank of America's quarterly revenue totaled $31.6 billion, with net income increasing to $9.1 billion. Diluted earnings per share were reported at $1.21. The bank's balance sheet provides flexibility, with average deposits totaling $2.02 trillion and average loans reaching $1.22 trillion.
The bank is scheduled to announce its third-quarter results on October 14, when investors will focus on net interest income, deposit pricing, and credit costs. However, sustained elevated rates may raise funding expenses and weigh on bond prices, while an easing cycle could shrink the margin advantage.
