Bank of Canada Holds Rate Steady Amid Trade Tensions and Inflation Worries
The Bank of Canada has decided to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 2.25% for the sixth time this year, amidst growing concerns over inflation and trade tensions.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem stated that the ongoing war in Iran and new U.S. tariffs pose significant risks to global energy prices and Canada's economic growth.
Macklem emphasized that monetary policy cannot offset these external factors, but can help maintain price stability in Canada by adjusting interest rates as needed.
The inflation rate was reported at 3% in July, exceeding the Bank of Canada's 2% target, and Macklem warned that this is too high for comfort.
