Bank of Canada Navigates Trade War Uncertainty in Rate Decision
The Bank of Canada is set to make its interest rate decision on Wednesday, amidst renewed trade war pressures. The central bank has kept its benchmark rate at 2.25 per cent for nearly a year now. Before the recent escalation in tariffs between Canada and the US, economists and financial markets had widely expected the Bank of Canada to keep rates on hold for the rest of the year and into 2027.
However, the imposition of 50 per cent tariffs by the US on August 22 has changed the economic context. The central bank now finds itself in a familiar dilemma, grappling with the uncertain impact of the trade war on its interest rate decision.
