Bank of Canada Unveils New $20 Bill Featuring King Charles III
The Bank of Canada unveiled its new vertical $20 bill on Thursday, featuring security measures and a design that highlights Canadian sovereignty and Indigenous cultures. The note is part of the central bank's vertical series and incorporates new security technologies that have never been used before on a Canadian banknote.
According to Governor Tiff Macklem, the Bank of Canada spent three years designing the bill, which included consultations with stakeholder groups, experts, and Indigenous community members. The design features King Charles III as the new face of the bill, replacing Queen Elizabeth II. This is the first paper currency to feature him.
The back of the note features the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France, which was unveiled in 1926 as a tribute to all Canadians who served during the First World War. The memorial commemorates the Battle of Vimy Ridge, where Canadian soldiers fought to capture the ridge after British and French forces previously failed to.
Bank of Canada officials said the design of the new $20 bill tries to incorporate different stories to reflect Canada, Canadians, and the unity of this country. Governor General Louise Arbour attended Thursday's event on Charles' behalf and praised the note for embodying collective trust in democratic institutions.
