Bank of Canada Unveils New $20 Bill Featuring King Charles III
The Bank of Canada unveiled its new $20 bank note featuring King Charles III on September 3, 2026. The design is vertical and includes many botanical elements reflecting the king's advocacy for sustainable action and environmental commitment. The floral emblems of all 13 provinces and territories are also featured.
The circular window in the center represents sustenance, gratitude, and healing, with four plants significant to Indigenous Peoples: wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided sweetgrass, and Arctic cotton. The maple leaf is a ubiquitous design element and key security feature. On the flip side of the note, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a tribute to Canada's military contributions and sacrifices.
The new bank note has several accessibility features for visually impaired individuals, including large high-contrast numbers and a tactile feature. The distinct colors used for each denomination also assist those with low vision. Governor Tiff Macklem noted that the $20 bill is 'easy to check and hard to fake.' The signatures of Macklem and Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers appear on the flip side.
