Bank of England Economist Calls for Interest Rate Hikes Amid Energy Crisis
Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill has called for interest rates to be raised to combat growing inflation risks stemming from the Middle East energy crisis.
Pill expressed discomfort with a 'wait-and-see' approach, arguing that policymakers cannot afford to wait for uncertainties to resolve themselves before acting.
He warned of the dangers of holding rates steady while awaiting firmer evidence on how the conflict involving Iran will influence inflationary pressure across the UK economy.
Pill previously voted in July as one of just two members of the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) who backed an interest rate rise, while the majority opted to hold benchmark rates at 3.75 per cent.
He emphasized that raising interest rates to 4 per cent would deliver a 'clear and unambiguous signal' of the MPC's willingness and ability to address upside risks stemming from events in the Middle East.
