Bank of England Economist Calls for Prompt Interest Rate Hike Amid Middle East Uncertainty
Bank of England's chief economist Huw Pill has called for an immediate interest rate hike to address inflationary pressures stemming from the Middle East energy shock. Speaking at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, Pill reiterated his concerns about the risks of leaving interest rates unchanged while waiting for clearer signs of how the Iran war has affected UK inflation.
Pill was one of two members on the nine-person Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to vote to raise interest rates in July. He argued that keeping interest rates at 3.75% would signal a 'bias to the status quo' and let monetary policy fall behind in addressing emerging inflationary pressures.
Pill suggested raising interest rates to 4% as a 'clear and unambiguous signal of the MPC's willingness and ability to address upside risks stemming from events in the Middle East.'
