Bank of England Economist Urges Interest Rate Hike Amid Middle East Energy Shock
Huw Pill, the Bank of England's chief economist, has called for a 'prompt' interest rate hike to tackle inflationary pressures sparked by the Middle East energy shock.
In a speech at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce on September 3rd, Pill expressed concerns about leaving interest rates unchanged while waiting for clearer signs of how the Iran war has affected UK inflation.
Pill was one of two members on the nine-person Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to vote to raise interest rates in July, when a majority preferred to keep rates at 3.75%, including governor Andrew Bailey.
The economist emphasized that keeping interest rates on hold may signal a 'bias to the status quo' and could let monetary policy fall behind in addressing emerging inflationary pressures.
