Bank of England Economist Warns of Inflation Threat from Middle East Conflict
The Bank of England's chief economist, Huw Pill, has emphasized the need for interest rates to rise quickly to combat inflation. Speaking in Edinburgh, Pill highlighted the 'dangers' of waiting for clearer evidence on the impact of the Middle East conflict on UK prices.
Pill, who voted for a 0.25% rate hike at the July meeting, argued that prompt action is necessary due to ongoing hostilities and rising oil prices. He stated that 'clear, prompt, and decisive policy action and communication would help steer markets and reduce uncertainty.'
Pill expressed discomfort with the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) current approach of a 'wait-and-see' stance on interest rates.
