Bank of England Governor Warns Advanced AI Threatens Global Economic Stability
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England, has warned that advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology poses a significant risk to global economic stability. In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey stated that 'frontier' AI models are showing increasingly sophisticated autonomy and problem-solving abilities, as well as threat capabilities.
Bailey expressed concern about the potential for cyber-disruption caused by these advanced AI systems, which could spread across jurisdictions and destabilize the global financial system. He noted that many countries do not have protocols in place to manage the development, release, and deployment of such models, heightening risks for the financial sector.
Bailey's letter echoes a previous warning he made about the need for international cooperation to address growing AI threats. He emphasized that 'no country can seal itself off from the cross-border nature of systems that are prevalent today.'
The Bank of England governor also highlighted concerns about the increased use of leverage in bond and equity markets, which is combining with high valuations in concentrated financial markets. He warned that this could amplify a future market correction and trigger multiple vulnerabilities.
