Bank of England Governor Warns of AI Bubble Threatening Global Economy
Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, has sounded an alarm about the potential risks of a market correction in the artificial intelligence sector. In a letter to G20 finance ministers, he warned that markets remain vulnerable to a disorderly correction that could spread across borders.
The concern is not just about investors borrowing more money, but also about high valuations and market concentration, particularly in the AI sector. Bailey pointed out that there's a growing financial link between AI companies and hyperscale technology groups providing computing infrastructure for advanced AI systems.
The warning comes as financial markets face additional uncertainty from energy-price shocks linked to the US-Iran conflict. Bailey said this has added to concerns about volatility across the global financial system. The Bank of England governor emphasized that a large shock or combination of shocks could trigger multiple vulnerabilities simultaneously.
