Bank of England Holds Interest Rates as Inflation Fears Persist
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is widely expected to keep interest rates on hold again this week. This would mark the fifth consecutive time they have made this decision, following last month's rate-setting meeting where seven out of nine members voted to maintain the current rate.
Despite a recent dip in inflation from 2.8% to 2.6%, a 15-month low, it is unlikely that rates will be reduced anytime soon. The Bank forecasts that inflation will rise above 3% by the end of the year, making any prospect of a rate cut more unlikely.
The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has stated that the expectation of cutting rates this year was 'off the table' in March and remains so at present. The MPC's next meeting is not until mid-September, leaving uncertainty around what decision they will make then.
