Bank of England Holds Interest Rates Steady Despite Growing Dissent

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to hold interest rates steady at 3.75% in its July announcement, despite growing dissent among committee members.

Bank Governor Andrew Bailey said that holding interest rates was appropriate given the current global economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures, although he acknowledged that risks to energy prices lie to the upside.

However, three MPC members - Megan Greene, Catherine Mann, and Huw Pill - voted for an immediate hike to 4%, citing concerns about second-round effects on inflation and the potential for repeated energy shocks.

The decision was widely anticipated by the mortgage industry, with many experts welcoming the hold as a relief for borrowers. However, some warned that the market's focus should shift from waiting for cheaper rates to making the most of current deals.
