Bank of England Probes Investment Banks' Concentrated Bets on Asian AI Stocks

The Bank of England (BOE) is investigating the holdings of global investment banks in Asian artificial intelligence (AI) stocks, citing concerns that concentrated bets could spread into a broader financial market risk.

According to The Financial Times, the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) under the BOE is examining the prime brokerage business of investment banks operating in the UK. Prime brokerage provides comprehensive financial services, including lending funds against stock portfolios held by hedge funds as collateral.

The investigation focuses on the scale of leverage used by investment banks to fund institutional investors' investments in Asian stocks through their UK entities. The BOE is considering assessing the level of risk and may require investment banks to increase the scale of liquid assets they hold in preparation for a market plunge or sudden default.
