Bank of England Recycles Old Phones for Gold and Sustainability
The Bank of England has partnered with The Royal Mint to recycle old phones and extract precious metals from e-waste. Under this agreement, thousands of decommissioned desk phones from the Bank's premises were sent to The Royal Mint's Reformation Metals facility in South Wales.
At the 3,700 square meter facility, gold and other materials have been extracted from the processed equipment. This initiative prioritizes reuse before recycling, with equipment assessed to identify any resale opportunities.
The Bank of England's commitment to reducing waste is reflected in its partnership with The Royal Mint, which supports the UK's circular economy goals. According to Sean Millard, Chief Growth Officer at The Royal Mint, 'This work brings together two iconic British institutions, The Royal Mint and The Bank of England, in support of shared sustainability goals.'
