Bank of England Sounds Alarm Over AI Financial Risks
The Bank of England has sounded an alarm over potential financial risks associated with the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Governor Andrew Bailey warned that a collapse in AI valuations could trigger a severe market downturn, citing vulnerabilities created by heavy borrowing, soaring company valuations, and the concentration of investment in a relatively small number of AI firms.
Bailey emphasized that it's not just the amount of borrowing, but how leverage is interacting with elevated valuations and concentrated investment. He pointed to Nvidia, one of the world's most valuable AI companies, as an example of the boom's effects, noting its shares have risen dramatically in recent years.
Bailey also highlighted fragilities in sovereign debt markets, where higher borrowing costs are creating additional vulnerabilities. He noted that highly leveraged investors, including hedge funds, have exposure to both equities and government debt, making losses in one area a threat to another.
