Bank of England Tests Stablecoin Payments with Digital Pound Lab
The Bank of England is making progress in exploring digital finance through its Digital Pound Lab. This testing environment allows the institution to evaluate how a future digital pound could interact with stablecoins, streamlining cross-border payments and improving trade finance for businesses globally.
Participating companies include NOBO Finance, Dun & Bradstreet, and Polygon Labs in this pilot project, focusing on complex cross-border commercial payments. The initiative aims to mitigate operational frictions in international trade by exploring blockchain-based solutions.
No real money is used in these simulations, and no retail customers participate. This does not constitute a definitive commitment to issue a CBDC. Instead, the Digital Pound Lab operates in a strictly controlled testing environment.
The test combines real-time transaction data with open finance information and business risk data from Dun & Bradstreet using Polygon Labs' smart contract infrastructure. This results in a reusable digital credit profile that allows SMEs to access better financing conditions instantly.
