Basler Kantonalbank Sees Profits Soar 13.8% in First Half
Basler Kantonalbank (BKB) reported higher profits in the first half of 2026, driven by increased interest income and growth in its wealth management business. The bank's operating income rose 13.8% year-over-year to 158.3 million Swiss francs, while net income for the banking group increased 10.6% to 94.8 million Swiss francs.
The cantonal bank attributed the growth in core business to 'forward-looking' balance sheet management and active liquidity management, as well as the high quality of its loan portfolio. However, it took a cautious approach to lending, with customer loans rising only 1.4% to 37.0 billion francs.
BKB's commission and service income also saw a boost, increasing 10.7% to 77.1 million Swiss francs due to asset management and investment solutions. Net trading income declined by 9.1%, however, due to the 'challenging environment in interest rate trading'.
The bank's operating expenses rose only 0.8% to 185.1 million, resulting in an improved cost-to-income ratio of 53.2%. BKB is optimistic about the rest of the year and expects to exceed last year's results in 2026 due to effective cost management and stable refinancing.
