Bearish Yen Sentiment Reaches New Lows in Japan's COT Report
The latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report from Japan's Commodity Futures Trading Commission shows that net speculative positioning in the Japanese yen has worsened to ¥-52.9K, up from ¥-42.1K previously.
This indicates a growing conviction among traders that the yen will weaken against the US dollar, driven by monetary policy divergence and economic fundamentals.
The Bank of Japan's ultra-loose monetary policy contrasts with the Federal Reserve's relatively hawkish stance, making the yen an attractive funding currency for carry trades. This has resulted in downward pressure on the currency.
Investors borrow yen at low interest rates to invest in higher-yielding assets elsewhere, further exerting pressure on the yen.
