Beethoven vs Kingfishers: ECB Shortlists Euro Banknote Designs
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled its shortlisted designs for the first revamp of the euro banknotes since they were released in 2002. The public can comment on the designs until September 21, but the ECB's governing council will ultimately choose the winning design.
The shortlisted designs feature either European historical figures or rivers and birds. The figure option includes Maria Callas, Beethoven, Marie Curie-Skłodowska, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner. The reverse of the notes depicts generic European cultural spaces.
The wildlife fans' option features rivers and birds, highlighting the importance of nature and environmental protection. The designs include a mountain spring with a wallcreeper, a waterfall with a kingfisher, and other combinations featuring various EU institutions.
