Bessent Backs Yen in Coordinated Effort with Japan

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is using his experience as a currency trader to prop up Japan's yen, which has been weakening rapidly. This is not the first time he has made a big currency bet - over a decade ago, he made $1 billion betting against the yen when he was the top investor for George Soros.

The coordinated effort by the US and Japan to stabilize the yen demonstrates the lengths that the Trump administration is prepared to take to shield the US economy from global market volatility. The US used its holdings of euros to buy yen, bolstering its value without shaking confidence in the dollar.

Bessent said that the Japanese government understands the importance of a stable yen and that the US is proud to stand with them in implementing their policies. He warned that further weakening of the yen could cause other currencies in the region, such as China's yuan and South Korea's won, to decline.
