Bessent Battles Rising Global Rates as Yen Intervention Looms
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's reputation as 'The House' may be in question due to his struggle to control Treasury yields, which are rising globally.
The rise in yields is a global phenomenon, with Japan's central bank policy rate at a multi-decade high and the yield on a 10-year JBG over 3%, a 30-year high. Similarly, German Bund yields have reached a 15-year high as the European Central Bank is expected to raise its main refinancing rate by another 25 basis points.
Bessent's efforts to control yields may be futile in the face of rising global rates, but he and Japanese officials are making a coordinated effort to fight this trend through intervention. This involves trading in the open market to reverse the direction of the currency's prevailing trend.
