Bessent Bets Big: Treasury Secretary Claims Control Over Yen Intervention
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed confidence in his understanding of Japan's policy management, suggesting that he is well-informed about upcoming interventions. In a statement to Tradeweb on September 9th, Bessent said he has 'clear visibility' on yen intervention and implied that market participants would be foolish to bet against him.
Bessent's assertion comes as the yen continues to appreciate sharply, reaching a seven-month high due to expectations of accelerated policy tightening by the Bank of Japan. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama echoed Bessent's sentiments in a press conference on September 8th, stating that Japan and the U.S. are aligned in their approach to currency markets.
Katayama also revealed that she has had discussions with Bessent on several occasions, including at recent G20 meetings. When asked about the current policy stance, Katayama emphasized that it remains unchanged since the coordinated intervention between Japan and the U.S. in late July.
