U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's recent comments have all but sealed the deal for a Bank of Japan (BOJ) interest rate hike in September, according to experts.

Bessent has been touring the media circuit, promoting the joint intervention with Tokyo last week as a win for Japan's economy and urging BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda to 'do what is best' for the country.

However, Bessent also emphasized that the intervention needs to be followed up with rate hikes to address market concerns about the BOJ being behind the curve in combating inflation. This aligns with the BOJ's current view on needing further rate hikes.

Kazuo Momma, a former BOJ executive and executive economist at Mizuho Research Institute, said intervention can buy time but needs to be followed up with rate hikes. He noted that U.S. pressure has set a grave precedent for Japanese policy, and blocking the BOJ from raising rates would be an act of betrayal to the United States.

The BOJ's next rate hike will have significant implications for market perceptions on borrowing costs and could lead to expectations of quarterly rate hikes, analysts say.
