Bessent Dares Investors to Short Yen as Treasury Announces $6 Billion Bond Repurchase
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been actively intervening in financial markets to strengthen the yen and curb rising Treasury yields. In a recent speech, he challenged investors to short the yen, saying 'I am the house now.' He claimed that his team has insight into what the Bank of Japan will do.
Bessent's Treasury coordinated a large-scale purchase of yen with Japan's Ministry of Finance in early August to prop up the currency. The move was seen as an attempt to prevent Japan from selling U.S. Treasuries, which would increase yields and weaken the dollar-yen exchange rate.
The Treasury also plans to repurchase up to $6 billion of longer-dated Treasuries on September 10, triple the normal amount, in an effort to curb Treasury yields. Bessent's actions have received mixed reviews, with some analysts questioning their effectiveness and sparking doubt among investors.
