Bessent Dares Traders to Bet Against Him in Yen Intervention
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced that he is willing to use the country's financial power as a foreign policy tool, including intervening in currency markets.
In a recent speech at SMU's Cox School of Business in Dallas, Texas, Bessent stated, 'I believe I can use the balance sheet of the U.S. for foreign policy.'
The Treasury Secretary also warned traders not to bet against his recent moves, saying, 'You can bet against me if you want.' This warning comes after a joint yen-buying intervention with Japan on July 31.
Bessent claimed that this coordination gives him insight into the actions of the Bank of Japan and Japanese policymakers, stating, 'When we intervene with the Japanese yen, I have pretty good insight into what the Bank of Japan is going to do, what Japanese policymakers are going to do.'
