Bessent Dares Traders to Bet Against Yen: 'I Am the House Now'
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has challenged currency traders to bet against a stronger Japanese yen, claiming that policymakers have an informational advantage over speculators. In a recent event at Southern Methodist University in Texas, Bessent emphasized coordination between the US Treasury and Japan's government on July 31, when they made coordinated yen purchases.
The intervention initially lifted the yen but its gains faded later as traders questioned the limited foreign-exchange firepower of the Treasury. However, Bessent argues that he has strong insight into what Japanese officials and the Bank of Japan may do, giving him an edge over speculators.
Bessent's warning matters because effective currency intervention requires policymakers to have a clear plan to reinforce it with monetary policy. The Bank of Japan is reportedly planning to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on September 18, which could further support the yen.
