Bessent Declares War on Yen Shorts: 'I Am the House Now'

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has delivered an unusual warning to currency traders betting against the Japanese yen, saying 'I am the house now.' This statement comes from a recent speech at Southern Methodist University on Tuesday.

Bessent claims that his coordination with Japanese officials gives him insight into Bank of Japan (BOJ) interventions in the currency markets. He's essentially challenging traders to bet against him, implying he has an inside view that they don't.

The yen has strengthened from 164 in July to about 153 in September against the dollar, which may seem like a fundamental strength. However, Bessent notes that betting on a falling USD/JPY doesn't require the yen to be fundamentally strong. It's more about what BOJ and policymakers do when they step into the currency markets.
