US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at an impending interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan in September. Speaking during the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting, he stated that 'I have access to some information that the market does not possess, and I believe the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan will take measures to strengthen the yen.'

Bessent's remarks suggest a high probability of an interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan in September. When asked whether this implied a rate hike, Bessent replied, 'I believe the market has already begun to price in this expectation.'

The US Treasury Secretary also addressed concerns about rising U.S. Treasury yields. He insisted that U.S. Treasury yields have remained 'basically flat' since Trump took office last year, despite actual rises to 4.75% on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note.
