Bessent Predicts Stronger Yen Ahead of BoJ Rate Decision
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed his belief that Japan will take action to strengthen its currency, the yen. In a recent interview with CNBC, he stated, 'I have information that the market doesn't have, and it's my belief that the Japanese government and that the BOJ (Bank of Japan) will do the things that will lead to a stronger yen.'
When asked if this meant raising interest rates, Bessent replied, 'I think the market's pricing that in now.' This suggests that the market is already anticipating an interest rate hike by the BOJ at its next policy meeting in September.
The yen did gain against the dollar after Bessent's comments, with the dollar falling 0.23% to 159.68 yen on Monday.
