Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has issued a warning to currency traders betting against the Japanese yen, saying 'I am the house now' and implying that he knows more about the Bank of Japan's plans than they do.

Bessent, a former macro trader who helped George Soros make a $1 billion profit by betting against the British pound in 1992, said critics who believe Treasury is taking excessive risk are missing his information advantage. 'It's my dream, I have asymmetric information,' he claimed.

The warning comes after the joint U.S.-Japan intervention in currency markets in July and August, which has led to expectations that the Bank of Japan will tighten monetary policy more aggressively. The yen has strengthened to around ¥153.3 per dollar, near its strongest level of the year.

Bessent's boast carries weight because he now wields government power and his knowledge of what policymakers intend to do. He is effectively telling traders that intervention shouldn't be analyzed as an isolated currency operation.
