U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reaffirmed the U.S.'s commitment to supporting Japan's efforts to stabilize its currency, the yen. Speaking on CNBC, Bessent stated that the U.S. will do 'whatever it takes' to help Japan, with a focus on benefiting the American economy and taxpayer.

Last week, Washington and Tokyo jointly intervened in the market to prop up the yen, which had reached 158 to the dollar following a significant undervaluation. Bessent emphasized that this undervaluation poses risks not only to Japan but also to other economies, potentially triggering competitive devaluations of other currencies.

Bessent expressed support for Japan's use of the Foreign and International Monetary Authorities Repo Facility, which would allow the Bank of Japan to borrow up to $60 billion to support the yen. He noted that this facility was created in 2020 and has since been underutilized, making it a reasonable option for the current crisis.

Regarding the U.S.'s sales of euros to buy yen, Bessent reassured European partners that this move is merely a reallocation of resources rather than an intention to manipulate currency markets. He also acknowledged that Japan faces challenges in defying economic gravity due to its high debt levels and need for higher interest rates, which are at odds with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's expansionary policies.
