Bessent Warns Yen Traders: 'I Am the House Now'

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has sent a clear warning to currency traders that they should be cautious about betting against the yen. In an event in Texas, he stated, 'I am the house now,' implying that his coordination with Japanese officials gives him valuable insight into the Bank of Japan's decisions.

Bessent is trying to discourage traders from rebuilding short-yen positions, and his comments show how closely Washington has become involved in Japan's efforts to stabilize its currency. The yen has been recovering after a slide to a four-decade low, with expectations that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates providing fundamental support.

The BOJ is likely to increase its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on September 18, and policymakers may leave the door open for faster tightening if inflation and currency conditions require it. Higher Japanese interest rates would improve the yen's yield appeal and reduce the need for repeated currency intervention.
