Bessent's Bond Intervention Sparks Fed-Credibility Concerns
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's surprise intervention in the bond market has sparked criticism from Wall Street investors, who warn it may undermine the agency's credibility and hinder the Federal Reserve's efforts to combat inflation.
The move, which aims to prop up the $32 trillion bond market by increasing long-term US government debt purchases, has raised concerns that it could have unintended consequences. Investors argue that this intervention is at odds with the Fed's goal of taming inflation, which currently stands at 3.7%.
'I think it's a self-limiting, self-defeating strategy,' said Greg Peters, co-chief investment officer at PGIM Credit. 'The markets are looking for something out of Warsh, but I am not sure what he's supposed to do here.'
