Bessent's Bond Market Gambit Backfires as Traders Bet Against Him

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been trying to influence the bond market by promising to 'at least double' the government's typical repurchases of government debt. This move was intended to stimulate demand for bonds and lower interest rates, thereby reducing the cost for the U.S. government to pay its bills.

However, bond traders have taken the opposite side of the Trump administration's trade, extending a sell-off of U.S. Treasurys and pushing interest rates to multiyear highs. The size of the bond buybacks is 'at this point, not enough to make a difference' on interest rates, according to bond strategist Guy LeBas.

The Treasury Department may be running out of tools to influence the market, short of more drastic moves like discontinuing some longer-dated bond issuance entirely. Wall Street analysts have noted that Bessent's intervention is unusual and likened it to an 'activist' approach, with one comparing it to the Federal Reserve's efforts during World War II to peg interest rates lower.

Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that once markets believe Treasury is defending a price, every rise in yields becomes a test of official resolve. The run-ups in bond yields reflect economic conditions and expectations for the Federal Reserve, which may choose to raise interest rates for the first time since 2023.
