U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's comments on Japan's monetary policy have all but sealed the Bank of Japan (BOJ) into a rate hike at its September meeting, according to analysts.

Bessent said intervention needs to be followed up with rate hikes to combat inflation concerns, which have pushed up Japanese Government Bond yields and risked spilling over to U.S. Treasury yields.

Kazuo Momma, executive economist at Mizuho Research Institute, warned that joint intervention by Japan and the U.S. sets a precedent for Japanese policy, citing the country's law granting the BOJ independence from political interference but also requiring close coordination with the government's economic policy.

The BOJ has historically come under pressure to fend off external shocks, such as volatile yen moves, with monetary policy.
