Bessent's Double Intervention Succeeds in Capping Long-End Yields
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's bold moves in August have left market analysts reeling, as he successfully capped long-end Treasury yields and sparked a synchronized rebound across global bond markets, equities, and gold.
Bessent first pushed for a joint U.S.-Japan effort to support the yen early in the month, aimed at preventing Japan from being forced into massive U.S. Treasury selloffs after depleting its foreign exchange reserves through unilateral intervention.
Mid-month, he announced a doubling of long-end Treasury buybacks, exploiting the summer liquidity lull to squeeze speculative short positions and drive down long-end yields and term premiums.
The 10-year Treasury yield briefly fell to around 4.63%, with the buying spilling over into European bond markets, equities, and gold.
