Bessent's Warning: Treasury Secretary Challenges Yen Shorts
The yen has gained strength against the US dollar, trading around 153.30 after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made a provocative statement. He said, 'I am the house now,' indicating that his team has an informational advantage on Japanese policy and challenging traders to bet against him if they want.
This statement comes at a time when the Bank of Japan is leaning towards another 25 basis point hike on September 18. The joint yen purchases in July initially squeezed USD/JPY lower, but the move partially faded, leaving traders debating how much actual firepower Washington is prepared to deploy.
The bigger issue now may be less about the size of the intervention wallet and more about the policy signal sitting behind it. If Treasury is effectively telling the market that it has a better read on the BoJ reaction function than the street does, yen shorts have to start asking whether they are still getting paid enough to stand in front of that train.
